Cun Lajci or Alija playing Lahuta in the Rugova highlands about Gjeke Stanisha.

Gjekë Stanisha (fl. 1600s) the ancestral father of the Rugova families

Gjekë Stanisha, Gjeke Stanishi-Rugovalia or Gjekë Preni (fl. 1600s) was an Albanian tribal chieftain of the Koshutan and Muriqi tribe[1], part of Kelmendi, who first populated the village of Koshutan in Rugova, Kosovo, roughly 400 year ago[2][3]. He was the son of Pren Martini of the Kola tribe in Malësia. Gjekë Preni and his tribe emigrated to Rugova. Gjekës brother, Marash Preni, emigrated to Haxhaj in Rugova.

The family was known for opposing foreign invaders[4]. Gjekë Preni is said to have killed the Ottoman commander Kadia in one of the battles between Rugova fighters and Ottoman forces on the mountain of Dbane (Stane)[5]. He received the name of the field and was called ”Gjeke Stanisha”. He had four sons: Deda, Leka, Luce, and Pal. Stanisha owned roughly 1000 sheep in the region of Dromodol. Stanisha was betrayed by a spy and arrested by Ottoman authorities and executed with orders from the pashaliks of Pejë[6]. One of Gjekë Prenis descendants was Zhuj Selmani[7].
