Albanians have bred very little with Slavs and Greeks

Albanians have minimally interbred unlike Greeks, Turks and Slavs

Key Points:

1. Illyrian Origins: Albanians are believed to be descendants of the Illyrians who lived in the Western Balkans for thousands of years. This connection suggests that modern Albanians are directly related to the earliest inhabitants of the region, whose origins date back as far as 8,000 years. This historical continuity indicates that Albanians are one of the oldest and most continuous populations in the Balkans.

2. Continuity and Minimal Interbreeding

Unlike the Greeks, Turks and Slavs who have been heavily interbred throughout history through migration and conquest, genetic studies show that Albanians have minimal external influences. This low level of interbreeding is notable given the complex history of the Balkans, where many peoples have come into contact with each other through migration and invasion.

Albanian communities, especially in remote and mountainous regions, often practiced endogamy*(marriage within the community but not within the family), which helped preserve their genetic homogeneity. These are not familial marriages, but marriages within the tribe or ethnic group to maintain ethnic identity and social structures.

Studies and genetic research:

1. Genetic studies show that Albanian DNA has remained largely untouched by the major waves of migration and invasions that have greatly affected other Balkan peoples such as the Greeks, Slavs and Turks. This genetic stability sets Albanians apart from other groups in the region who have experienced more genetic mixing.

2. Researchers have found that the modern Albanian population shows strong genetic continuity since the Bronze Age. These results suggest that Albanians are a genetically stable population directly linked to the ancient Illyrians.

Overall, research shows that Albanians are one of the least mixed and most genetically stable populations in the Balkans.
