The following text is quoted from a Montenegrin publication by Vojvoda Milorad Georgiev Medakovic from 1882 describing the Montenegrin losses in 1840 against the Albanian forces.
“On September 8, 1840, during Ottoman-Montenegrin battles, three Albanian leaders arrived near the village of Slatina: Asan Hot (Hasan Hoti) Mehmed Spaj (Mehmed Spahija) and Mehmed, the captain of 7,000 Albanians. When the Montenegrins learned of this, they gathered 200 others led by Mrđen Janković and Vuk Lѣšević. On September 9, the Turks attacked Salkovina, but the Montenegrins repelled them twice and pushed them back to the town of Zhabljak.
But unfortunately, more Albanians arrived and attacked these 200 Montenegrins with all their strength and defeated them. A few Montenegrins were locked in a hut near Salkovina. Knowing that there were few Montenegrins in this hut, the Albanians attacked the hut with all their strength, intending to kill them all. The barracks had two doors, which the Turks rushed at and poured heavy fire on. The Montenegrins were in extreme distress, but they had decided to surrender to the Turks alive before they were all killed. The fierce resistance of the Montenegrins captivity further irritated the Turks, who attacked them.”
