Avina Pasha founded Berana in 1862

“According to the written records, Berane was founded by the Turks in 1862 at the order of Avina-pasha, the commander of the Turks askers (troops). Avin-pasha commanded that a military stronghold should be built on the left bank of the Lim, at the spot where Berane lies today. The settlements followed shortly.”1

Birhane, Bir-han and “Berane” (a man of inns or taverns)

“When a settlement was formed around it, it was named Birhane after Bir-han, then Berane. Some say that the town also got its name from the neighboring village of Beran-sel.”2
