The Kiln (oven) of Kosiq in Krajë from Roman times discovered in 2021

Written by Petrit Latifi

Discovered in 2021, the remains of what appears to be a two-chambered oven were discovered in an olive grove in the village of Kosić in Anë i Malit.

Ovens or kilns were essential for the production of pottery, a crucial aspect of daily life for most of human history. In the past, pottery was used for cooking, eating and drinking, storage and transport. This discovery not only sheds light on local production techniques, but also enriches our understanding of economic activities and daily life in the area.
Kilns require specialized knowledge regarding their production and operation; high temperatures must be achieved and maintained to avoid cracking or misfiring the vessels. Furthermore, they require large amounts of wood to light the fire, which often has to be kept burning for several hours.

The oven was covered again for protection and is no longer visible or visitable. A bad end for history and archaeology enthusiasts and tourism promotion.
