In 1868, German ethnographer Felix Philipp Kanitz (1829 – 8 January 1904) traveled through the Balkans. In the region of Aleksinac, in the Čaršia (pazar, market town), he saw “the Albanian costume”.

Translation:
“In the Čaršia of Aleksinac I saw for the first time the Albanian costume. The Albanian element has for years descended from its rugged mountains and settled in the fertile plain of Toplica, which descends from the Serbian border mountain Kopaonik. A wedge between the Serbs and Bulgarians, it now treats both peacefully in the small town that arose on the dividing line of the three peoples, while beyond the borders of the Serbian border it is hostile to its Christian neighbors.”
