Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbegs letter to the Sultan in 1461 written in Albanian

Written by Petrit Latifi

In 1784, the Bavarian State Library published Skanderbeg’s letter, dated 1461, written in Albanian but translated into German. Quote:

“Here is a copy of the wonderful letter that Castriotto sent to Muhammad through his envoy. It is written in the Arnautian language and is still in the archives of the Czernowicz Castriotto House in Montenegro:

“Sultan of the Turks, I received your letter and here is my answer. To tell you the truth, I will not let you go for long, in the meantime I wish you luck and health. For the high respect you have shown me, I thank you but I do not seek your friendship. If once I decide to be your friend, I will remain so as long as I live. God through God my birth and my sword and their father with the love of my heart and my religion, that I do not want to increase my fame and my happiness at the expense of their lives and goods.”
