This article is about the history of Montenegrin Russophilia or Russocentrism and the Pan-Slavist movement.
In the 19th century, there was a general russophilia existent among Montenegrin society which had begun since the 18th century. King Nikola Petrovic was even reported to have waved a Russian flag during the Montenegrin assault of Albanian territories, according to history professor Rexhep Dedushaj in his book “Plave and Gucia region over the centuries.
In the book “Петар Други Петровић-Његош као владалац By Лазар Томановић”, from 1896, written by Лазар Томановић, writer and former Prime Minister of Montenegro,we read:
“The Montenegrins are very attached to Russia and constantly confirm: We are always ready to blindly obey even a simple Russian soldier and to die for our Russian Tsar, a great patron, only for Russia to publicly take us under its protection as soon as it would ensure us happy days and eternal glory for itself. Montenegrins are no less devoted to their supreme authority, which they respect extremely. They still respect the supreme authority over them of the Archimandrite who came to replace their late Metropolitan Njegoš and call him Master.”
