Iconographical evidence of 15th century Albanians using tirqe, plis and shawl

Authored by Petrit Latifi

This painting is titled “The arrival of the Arbëresh in Biancavilla (1488)” and is a fascinating iconographical and primary evidence proving one thing: 15th century Albanians wore both the white shawl we see among the Kelmendis and Rugova highlanders. They also wore the “tirqe”, or wool pants, as well as the plis (white cap).

Albanians arriving

The man in the middle is wearing Albanian tirqe, as well as a xhamadan (red) and a white shawl.

The Albanians on the left are wearing the white cap, or plis.

This painting visually represents the traditional clothing worn by Albanians, demonstrating that key elements of their attire, such as the white plis (qeleshe) hat, white woolen tirqe trousers, and white headscarves for women, have existed since at least the 15th century.

The presence of these garments in the artwork suggests a strong cultural continuity and historical identity among Albanians. The plis, a distinctive white felt cap, has been a symbol of Albanian heritage for centuries, primarily worn by men. The tirqe, made of white wool, are characteristic of traditional Albanian dress, particularly among highlanders and those in rural areas. Meanwhile, the white headscarves worn by women further reflect the customary dress code of the time, emphasizing modesty and regional identity.

The historical accuracy of these details in the painting indicates that Albanian clothing styles remained largely unchanged over the centuries, reinforcing the notion that these garments were well-established cultural markers as early as the medieval period. Whether in religious gatherings or everyday life, this attire was a visible representation of Albanian tradition, distinguishing them from other ethnic groups in the region.
