Serbian propaganda and the “heroic myth” of the Serbian Retreat of 1915

Authored by Petrit Latifi

In 1915, during the Serbian retreat, the Serbian propaganda of the time exaggerated the retreat making it into a heroic myth. However, during this time, Serbian troops had repeatedly committed many atrocities between 1912 until the retreat. Oliver Jens Schmitt writes:

“In the Serbian national consciousness, the retreat is mythically and heroically exaggerated, and the Albanian mountain population is accused of a lack of assistance. However, it is forgotten that shortly before, Serbian troops in central Albania had committed massive attacks against the Albanian population.”
