The Fustanella is originally Albanian

Authored by Petrit Latifi

This is a rare photo of a worker belonging to Heinrich Schliemann (initiator of the excavations at Troy and Mycenae). He is photographed wearing an Albanian fustanella. Schliemann writes in his book “Ithaka, Peloponnes und Troja” about fustanella as following (p.57):

“…The Fustanella is originally an Albanian costume and was only adopted by the Greeks since the revolution. In Albania it has been preserved since the most ancient times; one finds it often on old statues, especially that of King Pyrrhus of Epirus in the museum in Naples.”
