A road built 7,000 years ago has been found at the bottom of the Adriatic Sea, off the coast of Croatia. This monumental discovery is opening a new chapter in the study of Neolithic civilization and transport infrastructure in prehistoric times.
Archaeologists led by Mate Perica of the University of Zadar spotted this prehistoric road connected to a settlement on the island of Korcula, while analyzing satellite images of the bottom of the sea. They saw a road covered with stones, four meters wide.
Surprised by the arrangement of the stones, it was confirmed that it was a stone path, and many other artifacts, such as stone tools, were discovered. The discovery of various ceramic objects further confirmed that it was a connecting road.
This discovery revealed that our ancestors were able to build roads to connect settlements with the right resources. It makes us understand that Neolithic man was more developed than previously thought.
