In the Hungarian paper “Aradi Közlöny” from 1912, we can read of an interview which King Nicola of Montenegro did with the Daily Express employee regarding the Montenegrin atrocities. Here, King Nikola Petrovic openly lied and denied the Montenegrin war crimes and threatend to hang Catholic Albanians.

“London: King Nikita of Montenegro received the Daily Express employee for questioning at the villa in Krusevác, where Prince Mirkó used to spend the winter. The king began the conversation by saying that he tried everything possible to prevent the war, but the Turks provoked Montenegro to the very end and even built guardhouses on Montenegrin territory. The king then spoke about the accusation that the Montenegrins burned villages and murdered women.”

“I saw my men,” continued the king, “all disciplined and fair-minded” but it is possible that malisors and disorderly teams have committed such things in some cases.

The king now slammed his fist on the table and excitedly said:

“Yesterday I told a Catholic priest that I will hang everyone who dares to do such things now. I ordered them to keep a book on the Albanians.”
