Serbian desertion in the army of 1913 in occupied Albania

According to the Dutch paper “Gemeentearchief Schiedam – Krantenkijker Nieuwe Schiedamsche Courant”, published October 9, 1913, on page 1, we can read that in 1913, many Serbian soldiers did not want to fight in occupied Albania due to being exhausted from the Balkan wars. Nikola Pasic then forbade newspapers in Belgrade to report about desertion.

“A large number of the soldiers called up do not want to respond to this summons. “They have experienced enough in two wars, now others must go”, the refusers answer, “and why were the troops allowed to return from the Albanian border, which made the uprising possible?” For the time being, in order to prevent desertion on a large scale, the government has given orders that no male persons under 45 years of age may cross the national borders.

Since this severely restricts travel abroad, trade suffers great damage. The government now wants to send other divisions to Albania than it had originally planned. Silence is maintained about the attitude of the soldiers who have been called up in the troops. The newspapers in Belgrade are not allowed to report anything about it.”
