The Serb assault on the Albanian border of Nikaj-Merturi in 1927

For more than 15 years, beteen 1912-1927, Serbian military, paramilitary and other Serb terrorists and murderers constantly violated, harrassed and invaded Albanian territories regardless of international conventions and agreements. Many massacres against Albanians were carried out. As late as 1927, Serbian chetnik komitadjis, working for the Yugoslav government, continued to attack the Albanian border. In 1927, the Alpenzeitung published an article. Cited:

“Irregular gangs attacked the Albanian border post at Nikaj Merturi and demanded that the gendarmes surrender. The firefight dragged on into the morning. Many Albanian gendarmes were injured. Responsible Albanian circles are somewhat concerned about these events because they demonstrate the fact that the Yugoslav authorities do not care about such incidents.”

The Serb gang was believed to be Yugoslav agents

“Rome, May 31. Giornale d’Italia reports from Tirana that the Albanian border guard of Nicai Merturi was attacked by a gang of Komitatschis believed to be in the service of Yugoslav agents. Two men were killed on the Albanian side. The extent of the attackers’ losses is unknown.”
