In 1929, a thief in Liepzig stole, among other paintings, a painting titled “Albanischer Hirtenknabe” painted by Anselm Feuerbach (1829-1880).
“Major painting theft in Leipzig. Paintings by Rubens, Tischbein, and Feuerbach stolen.
Leipzig, August 23. A sensational theft was committed last night at the Franke art salon on Goethestrasse. A painting by Rubens depicting an outward-looking apostle was stolen, followed by another painting by Rubens, also an apostle, a Tischbein painting, “Cleopatra,” and Feuerbach’s “Albanian Shepherd Boy.” Valuable ivory miniatures were also stolen.
The selection of the stolen paintings betrays the art connoisseur, as the thief took only the most valuable pieces. The characteristic features of the stolen paintings have been signaled worldwide, so that they are known to all museums and art dealers.”
