The Serbian invasion of Kastrati in 1920

Petrit Latifi

In 1920, the Serb Yugoslavs invaded the Albanian region of Kastrati in Albania thus violating the border agreement of 1913. Many other regions in Albania were invaded by the Serbs as well. This kind of chauvinist violation was a common reoccurence in Belgade since 1913. Cited from the paper “Alpenland” from 1920:

“Rome, August 25 (Ag. Stefani.) The Albanian delegation sent a note to the Italian government emphasizing that, following the trivial incident that occurred at the border near Shkodër between Albanian peasants and Serbs, the Albanian government had hastened to provide information in Belgrade and to assure the Serbian government of its good intentions towards Yugoslavia.

Nevertheless, Serbian troops have crossed the Albanian border and penetrated the territory of the Kastrati. We protest vigorously, the note states, against the incursion into our territory and against the belligerent intentions of the Belgrade government. We urgently request Your Excellencies to halt the advance of the Yugoslav troops and to demand that the Belgrade government withdraw its troops from all territories occupied since the armistice and return them to the 1913 borders.

The Albanian government will do its utmost to prevent incidents and preserve Rule 34; but its efforts will be in vain as long as the Yugoslavs do not vacate Albanian territory. Belgrade’s policy is a sign of new complicities on the ball.”
