Serbian provocations, massacres and forced conscription at the Albanian border of 1915

Petrit Latifi

In 1915, the “Meraner Zeitung” published reports from Serbia stating that the Serbian army directed the Serbian Drina Division towards the Albanian border in order to provoke a conflict with the Albanians, and then invade more Albanian territories. The Serbian army also violently enlisted Albanian men in the Serbian military, despite the Turko-Serbian Peacey Treaty, which provoked the Albanians.

“According to reports from Serbia, the Serbs intend to direct the Drina Division toward the Albanian border, which confirms the widespread assumption that the Serbs wanted to provoke a conflict with the Albanians in order to conquer new territories and advance towards the Adriatic.

The Albanians were mainly provoked by the fact that in recent weeks the Serbs had enrolled all Muslims in the border region in the army, even though they had committed themselves to exempting Muslims from military service under the Turkish-Serbian peace treaty. According to another version, it is possible that the Serbs want to come to the aid of their accomplice Essad Pasha, who is allegedly being harassed by his former supporters in Durazzo. In any case, large-scale massacres of the Albanian population are to be feared in the border region”.
