The Greek peacebreak of 1913 and Pan-Hellenic propaganda

In 1913, the Greek arsonists and propagandists decided to violate the Peace agreement, and send their so-called “Holy Battalions”, ironically consisting of Orthodox Albanians, to resist any border agreement with an Albanian majority population. The Greek Megali-chauvinists had difficulties following the example of Serbia and Montenegro who withdrew their invasion forces from Albanian territories. These difficulties of the Greek authorities led to intervention from Italy and Austro-Hungary.

“The Greek peacebreakers. November, December 29. The Triple Alliance will approve the postponement of the withdrawal of Greek troops from the occupied Elban territories by January 20, according to the English proposal. A very well-informed newspaper writes: “We doubt not that the Greek government, following the example of the Serbian and Montenegrin governments, will yield to the will of Europe and withdraw its troops from the areas in question by the appointed date.

Nevertheless, it is to be feared that the resistance offered by the so-called ‘Holy Battalions’ will still cause difficulties. These battalions are led by Greek officers. A large part of the volunteers, however, consists of immigrant Albanian Orthodox Christians. The difficulties caused by the Pan-Hellenic Propaganda on the Greek border will be difficult to overcome Italian public opinion must prepare itself for the fact that Italy would be forced to take energetic action at the given moment.”
