In 1913, when the Serbian forces invaded Monastir, they forced the Albanian notables were forced to sign a declaration of support for the Balkan League. Those who refused were murdered by the Serbs. In the “Volksblatt” from 1913 we can read:
“Forced demonstrations of loyalty. The following is reported from Constantinople:
News has been received from Albanian circles according to which the Albanian inhabitants of the Vilayet of Monastir were forced by Serbian troops, under threat of armed force, to declare themselves supporters of the allied Balkan states. Telegrams of loyalty drafted to this effect, with forced signatures, were sent to London. Many people who refused to sign these types of declarations were killed by the troops. The Albanian notabels in Constantinople will convey protests against this action to the ambassadors of Austria, Hungary, and Italy”
