Serbias declaration of war against Italy and Albania in 1920

Petrit Latifi

In 1920, the “Der Tiroler / Der Landsmann” published an article writing that the Italian authorities, threatened by Serbias expansionist imperialism, warned Serbia that any expansion towards the Albanian coast would be regarded as a hostile act. This did not stop the Belgrade regime who used oral and written propaganda to declare war against Italy and make it a national cause. The Serbian king then spoke of reclaiming “unredeemed provinces” (meaning all of Albania)

“Italy recently declared in Belgrade that any further Serbian attempt to become a border state on the Adriatic Sea would be regarded by Italy as a hostile act. Through skillful propaganda, the Serbian government has managed to turn the matter into a vital national Serbian issue. Oral and written propagandists throughout the country have accomplished their task astonishingly well.

Serbian king spoke of reclaiming “unredeemed provinces” (meaning all of Albania)

“Serbia is preparing for war against Italy with every means at its disposal. Only recently, the Serbian king spoke in a speech in Belgrade of “unredeemed provinces” that were eagerly awaiting help from the Serbian brothers. At present, Serbia resembles a large military camp. Every town is teeming with soldiers.”

Serbia did not ratify the Peace Treaty and was still holding 40,000 Bulgarian captives

“The recruitment is in full swing. Even the Bulgarians captured during the war. Serbia, as is well known, has not ratified the Peace Treaty and is holding over 40,000 Bulgarians captive. They are being used for mobilization work, such as repairing strategic roads, etc.”
