The Red Cross relief expedition in Albania for the sick and wounded during the Balkan War of 1912

In 1912, in order to help the wounded and sick Albanian population suffering under the Serbian, Montenegrin and Greek war crimes, murders, rape, pillaging, Vienna and the Red Cross sent equipment, personel and help. Cited from the “Tiroler Stimmen”:

“(Relief Expedition of the Red Army for Albania.) The bloody fighting that has taken place along Albania’s borders in recent weeks has spread much redness and misery among the Albanian population. Thousands of sick and wounded remain without any help, and the need grows from day to day.

The Albanian government now turned to the Imperial and Royal Ministry of Neuss with a request for the dispatch of a relief expedition through the Austrian Note Cross. The federal leadership of the Red Army has decided to send a relief expedition to Albania, even though it has not yet been able to complete the expenses for the four relief detachments that recently returned from the Second Balkan War.

The cost of these relief expeditions sent to Serbia and Bulgaria is estimated to be around 100,000 crowns. Since the existence of the Austrian Red Cross, this is the first time that the Society has been required to send three large-scale relief expeditions to various foreign theaters within a single year. The costs for the third relief operation this year are expected to amount to 60,000 crowns.

The expedition will depart for Tirana in the next few days; it will be a fully equipped field hospital on a smaller scale and will consist of a medical officer and two assistant doctors, ten nurses, three non-commissioned officers, and ten medical soldiers. The equipment carried by the expedition will comprise several railway wagons, as sickbeds will also be sent from Vienna. In addition, a standardized set of instruments and a large quantity of dressings, as well as medicines and rejuvenating agents of all kinds will be sent to Albania”
