Montenegrin discrimination against native Albanians and destruction of Catholic churches in 1913

Petrit Latifi

In 1913, the “Innsbrucker Nachrichten” publised an article about the political atmosphere in Montenegro during the assault on Shkodër. The article states that there was a public discrimination against Albanians who were forced to work for Montenegrin interests. When Prince Peter Petrovich-Njegosh of Montenegro was asked why he sacrificed thousands of Montenegrins to invade Shkodër, he replied “because it gives us pleasure!”. Albanian Catholic churches and monasteries were destroyed and replaced with Orthodox churhces.

Albanians working as slaves

“Vienna, April 4. The “Albanian Corr.” reports from Cetinje: Montenegro currently presents a picture of the greatest misery. Almost every house is in mourning. The entire male population from 18 to 70 years of age is under arms. The Albanians living here, mostly merchants, are being called upon for work partly by the military intendancy, partly by the civil authorities.”

Prince Peter Petrovich-Njegosh of Montenegro: “Sacrificing Montenegrins gives us pleasure”

“Thus, in Cetinje, a wealthy merchant had to shovel snow on the street; another was made to carry heavy loads outside Scutari and was so tormented that he became seriously ill. It is common knowledge here that the powers absolutely do not want to cede Scutari to Montenegro. A respected personage asked Prince Peter why, under these circumstances, they continued to storm Scutari and sacrifice so many human lives. The prince replied: “Because it gives us pleasure!”

Albanian churches and monasteries were damaged by the Montenegrins who replaced them with Orthodox churches

“The hardship is generally very great. The women carry their fewest belongings to Cattaro to sell and buy food. The flogging of religious opponents, which has become increasingly prevalent recently, is striking. In Cetinje, people rejoice that the Albanian monasteries and churches of Scutari have been badly damaged. They point out that Orthodox churches will now be built in their place. “

Forced conversions to Orthodoxy and Dobricic

“Among Montenegrin Catholics, who are almost entirely Albanian, there is great outrage that the Catholic Archbishop of Antivari, Dobricic, has denied the Montenegrin forced conversions in Italian newspapers. However, this action surprised no one here, as Dobricic is known as a willing tool of King Nikita. When he was a priest in Cetinje, he was boycotted by his parishioners because he wanted to Slavize them with all his might.”
