The Balkan League defeated the Turks thanks to Isa Boletini and the Albanians

In this interesting article from 1916, published in the “Innsbrucker Nachrichten: edizioni serali”, the war correspondent Heinrich Wodnik of the “Dresn. Anz.” writes from the Austrian war headquarters on February 29th that, among other things, the Serbs, Montenegrins, Bulgarians and Greeks were inspired to declare war on the Ottomans thanks to the Albanians and Isa Boletinis heroic struggle who paved the way and showed how weak the Turks had become.

Cited from the article:

“The World War arose from the Balkan War, but the Balkan War from Albanian turmoil, which, slowly spreading from isolated mountain wildernesses, finally gradually spread from the remote mountain wilderness into the broad cultural zone of the Wardar Valley, where it offered the neighboring Serbs, Bulgarians, and Greeks a belligerent incentive Serbs, Bulgarians, and Greeks would hardly have ever ventured into the Turkish Empire if Isa Boletini had not shown them the way to Shkup and revealed how precariously Turkish state power had degenerated under Abdul Hamid’s rule.”

The Albanians had no intention of helping the Balkan nations invade the remains of the Turkish vilayets. The Serbs and Montenegrins betrayed the Albanians who regretted having helped the Balkan League defeat the Turks. Isa Boletini realized that the Serbs and Montenegrins were equally as oppressive as the Ottomans.

“The Albanians had originally had no intention of showing the way to the Sultan’s neighbors, and later, when they felt the harsh hand of their Serbian loyalty, they bitterly regretted that things had gone their way. Even Isa Boletini, the Turkish hater who blindly embraced the Serbs, constantly waited for the moment to atone for his betrayal and then paid with his life for his rebellion against the defeated Serbian-Montenegrin tyrants in Podgorica.”
