French, Italian, African and Entente atrocities and war crimes against Albanians in 1918

Petrit Latifi

In 1918, the Albanian Corespondence reported from Shkodër about the Entente (French and Italian) forces committing various atrocities against the Albanian population. French colonial troops, irregulars from North Africa and colored (african) formations murdered and looted, and raped Albanian women and girls. In Berat, the French persecuted Albanian nationalists and arrested many others. Italian troops massacred Albanians in Fier.

“July 31, 1918 (Publication approved by the censor). The Entente troops in Albania

“The Albanian Correspondence reports from Scutari: According to consistent reports from reliable people who fled from the recently occupied areas, the Entente troops are displaying extraordinary savagery toward the local population.

“The French are showing great hostility toward the population. The French colonial troops, irregulars from North Africa, and black formations are committing all kinds of cruelties against the Albanians. Looting, murder, and violence against Muslim women and girls are commonplace. In Berat, nationalists are being severely persecuted by the French. Many respected people have been arrested.”

“The Italians are continuing their 1914 course in the occupied territory, primarily persecuting Muslims and nationalists. In Fieri, the invading Italian soldiers broke into the houses. When the population resisted, the Italian commander ordered all the men of the town to be evacuated. Some of them were massacred.”
