Having committed atrocities against Albanians and Bosniaks since 1912, the Serbian troops began pillaging their own countrymen in 1917. The Austro-Hungarian troops however put a stop to the Serbian robbers, according to an article in the “Innsbrucker Nachrichten” from 1917. Among these criminals were Uros Kostic Pecanin of Mitrovica, guilty of atrocities against Albanians, who was finally killed by an Albanian policeman under the Austrian command.

“Serbia’s Banditry. The “Belgrade News” reports:
After the withdrawal of the Serbian army from Serbian territory, small bands of bandits, usually consisting of three or four people, emerged in various villages and committed the most brutal crimes against the local rural population, which had already been severely affected by the war.
Thanks to the immediate, energetic intervention of the Austro-Hungarian troops, and especially the Austro-Hungarian Gendarmerie organized immediately after the conquest of the country, it was possible within just a few weeks to thoroughly eradicate this banditry, which had always been favored by the soil conditions and the lack of communications in Serbia, in the Military General Government area.
Through the strict implementation of the measures taken by the military authorities, almost absolute life security was already achieved in the occupation area during the course of last spring”
Serbian war criminal Uros Kostic Pecanin of Mitrovica killed by an Albanian policeman
“It is reported from Mitrovica that one of the most prominent leaders of these gangs, Uros Kostic Pecanin, who also managed to escape with the help of his accomplices, has already been rendered harmless. He was first struck down in the municipality of Banjska Mjeka by a well-aimed blow from an Albanian policeman in our service.
Pecanin, who had given himself the title of Vojvod, had been hated for 15 years by the entire population of Kosovo, regardless of religion, because of his unjust acts of robbery and murder. Now, even this serious criminal has been deprived of his murder weapon”.
