In the 1920s, Serbian expansionist imperialism led Belgrade to finance right-wing groups to infiltrate, instigate and invade Albania. In 1925, these violations continued and Albanian troops captured many Serbian soldiers who had invaded Albanian soil. The Albanians captured many cannons and machine guns which the invaders had brought with them. It is evident that Belgrade suffered from internal conflicts. In the “Brixener Chronik” we can read:
Cited from the article:
“Serbia is stirring up trouble in Albania.
As is well known, the Albanians cannot stop mousing, and Serbia cannot stop stirring up trouble. Previously, it undermined the soil in the Austrian border regions, hiring and paying countless traitors there until it succeeded in removing the heir to the throne, Franz Ferdinand, provoking war, and securing the coveted booty through the conclusion of peace. This eliminated the main field of Serbian subversive activity.
Now the famous Balkan state, called Serbia, is looking for another area where it can continue its “mission,” for which it is eminently qualified. Whether it will be as lucky and successful in this as it was against Austria is, of course, very questionable.
The country chosen by Serbia now appears to be Albania. Right-wing uprisings have been organized there by gangs for several weeks. Initially, the cause was not fully explained. Only gradually did the secret emerge.
The Albanian troops succeeded in capturing regular Serbian soldiers who had broken into Albania, as well as in capturing cannons and machine guns that also came from Serbia. This provides conclusive proof that the unrest in Albania is being fueled by the Serbian government.
The purpose of this latest breach of peace is not clear. One gets the impression that Belgrade’s policy, struggling with the most serious internal conflicts, is pursuing a reckless course, and irresponsible elements of the military and civil administration threaten to seize control.
This would pose a danger that should not be underestimated. Even though Italy has bound itself by treaties with Yugoslavia and has declared no active intentions toward Albania, it could hardly allow the borders on the other bank of the Aoria to be changed.”
