In 1913, the “Innsbrucker Nachrichten” published a report from the Albanian Correspondence in Kavaja about the Serbian oppression of Albanians in the village. The Serbs would steal old and new weapons, valuables, and food from the villagers. The Albanians were also used as slaves, and forced to do hard labour. Anyone who did too little work was mistreated.

“The Serbs in Albania. Vienna, April 19. The “Albanian Correspondence” reports from Kawaja: The Serbs are maintaining a strict regime here. All houses have been searched several times, and all old and new weapons, as well as many valuables, have been confiscated from the owners. Food has also been confiscated.
The inhabitants are forced to do hard labor for the Serbs and are mistreated if, in the opinion of the inspectors, they do too little work. Anyone found outside their home after 6:00 p.m. is mistreated and taken away. The road to Murecega is closed to traffic, and no one is allowed to cross the Shkumbi River. All incoming letters are opened by the Serbs. Recipients of letters of a political nature have repeatedly been subjected to the punishment”.
