Serbian demagogical agitation against Hungarians and Albanians in 1876

Petrit Latifi

In 1876, the “Tiroler Stimmen” published an article citing a report from Budapest written by a correspondent from the “Kelet Nepe” in Semlin about the Serbian governments agitations against Albanians and Hungarians. In this chauvinist, demagogical and hegemonial letter, Serbs living in other lands are encouraged to “revolt” against Albanians and Hungarians.

“AB. Budapest, February 19. What we reported yesterday about the Serbian agitation in southern Hungary is confirmed today by a correspondence from the “Kelet Nepe” newspaper in Semlin. The same paper also carries the text of the proclamation that the agents of the Serbian government are distributing among the Serbs on this side of the Sava, and we do not want to withhold this interesting document from your esteemed readers:

“The hour of the rebirth of all Serbs has struck. Lay aside spades and shovels and take up arms and knives against the traditional enemies of our people, wherever they may be. But first, hasten to our aid and let us defeat the enemy of Kosovo Polje (Blackbird Field); then we will also seek out the enemy who oppresses half a million Serbs; we will seek him out at Slankamen (near Semlin in Hungary), which in any case legally belongs to our prince. Up! Sacrifice everything for Serbdom. The great battles will unite us all.”
