The Serbian invasion of Slavonia and the defeat by Austro-Hungary in 1914

In 1914, the “Tiroler Grenzbote” reported from the newspaper “Drau” that Serbian troops had invaded Slavonia and failed as the Austro-Hungarians defeated them.

Cited:

“Vienna, September 24. The South Slavic Correspondence reports from Effeg: In addition to the result of the week-long fighting with the Serbian troops that had broken into Slavonia, the official newspaper Drau summarizes:

The complete failure of the Serbian invasion is now clearly evident. The battlefield is littered with the corpses of Serbian soldiers. It must give us all the impression that we let the Serbs come to Slavonia in peace in order to completely destroy them there.

The Serbs invaded Slavonia with a force of at least 30,000 men and entrenched themselves in forests, canals, and ditches. Our troops advanced from two sides and inflicted a terrible defeat on the Serbs at Jakovo and Alt-Bazua. Artillery and machine guns have reaped a terrible harvest among the Serb ranks

So far, 7,000 prisoners have been taken; thousands of Serbs, wounded and dead, are still lying around, while many Serbs died in the Sava.”
