Disturbing Serbian murder cases in 1932 and 1937

In 1932 and 1937, the newspapers “Neueste Zeitung” and “Alpenländer-Bot” published articles on disturbing murders taking place in the regions of Krnjevo and Zajecar of Vrtaca in the years 1932 and 1937.

“Bestial murder attack by Serbian robbers.

KB. Semendria, November 30. In Dorse Krnjevo, unknown robbers committed a bestial murder. Three bandits armed with rifles broke into the home of a wealthy, 77-year-old farmer during the night. They tied him to a cart loaded with straw and set fire to the straw. The farmer died shortly afterward from the burns he sustained. After brutally abusing the rest of the household, the robbers disappeared into the darkness of the night with a loot of 20,000 dinars.”1

“Horrific act by Serbian robbers.

In a house near the village of Vrtaca, not far from Zajecar, the robbers Mihailovic and Dokic, disguised as gendarmes, committed a brutal murder. They kidnapped a four-year-old child and a 16-year-old boy from the village as hostages in order to demand ransom. When they realized that the child’s father had informed the authorities, they hacked the child into several pieces, shot a peasant woman, and retreated with the second boy into an impassable forest. The gendarmerie is pursuing the murderers.”2
