The word that unites, congratulates and transmits our culture from generation to generation
The Albanian toast is more than an inherited custom – it is a living rite, a form of spiritual expression and a testament to the culture of Albanian hospitality. Today, it has been officially recognized as an intangible national asset, an appreciation that further strengthens its importance in the cultural identity of Albanians.
What is a toast?
A toast is a ceremonial speech that accompanies the raising of a glass on special occasions such as weddings, family celebrations, community events or memorials. Often structured in poetic verses, it contains congratulations, blessings, personal or collective stories and folk wisdom. In essence, it is an act of respect and a wish for good – for the bride and groom, friends, guests, the homeland or those who fell for freedom.
A Mirror of the Albanian Spirit and Unity
Tolli is not simply a custom associated with traditional drinks such as wine or rakia, but an art form of speech, which gives voice to deep feelings and shared values. It serves as a means to strengthen social bonds and to express gratitude, respect and love.
Regional diversity, a treasure in its own right
Tolli varies from one region to another, reflecting the cultural diversity of the Albanian regions. In the North, toasts are solemn, with epic tones and manly pride. In the South, they take on a lyrical form, with beautiful poetic figures and deep emotional feelings. But in all regions, the essence is the same – the power of words spoken from the heart.
A heritage that must be preserved and cultivated
Today, more than ever, it is important that traditions such as tolli are documented, taught and passed on to new generations. It is living proof of our national identity and an asset that makes us proud in the eyes of the world.
