The Bread Revolt of Shkodra in 1854

Petrit Latifi

On August 8, 1854, a bread revolt broke out in the city of Shkodra, against grain speculators and Ottoman invaders. The revolt was led by Osman Alia.

Hundreds of armed workers and apprentices broke into the grain warehouses of the merchants and distributed it to the hungry people of the city and the highlands. The revolt was calmed down with the intervention of the French consul in Shkodra, while the Sultan was forced to replace the governor. But then, the new governor, with numerous forces concentrated in the city, took retaliatory measures, many were arrested and exiled. The leaders of the revolt were able to escape only by leaving Albania.
