In 1862 the Montenegrins assaulted the island of Vranina, known as “Sini i Liqenit”, its original Albanian name. After Oso Kuka defended the tower and opened fire at the gun powder barrels, killing hundreds of Montenegrins, they lost and retreated. However, 21 years later, in 1883, the Montenegrin imperialists once again assaulted the Albanians of Vranina. Being stronger in numbers, the Montenegrin attackers killed 25 Albanians on the lake. Cited from Revalsche Zeitung, March 24, 1883:

“Cattaro, March 31 (19). Wednesday around noon a new battle took place between Montenegrins and Arnauts. Twenty-five Arnauts were attacked during the crossing from the island of Vranjina to land by thirty Montenegrins of the Ceklinier Battalion, who were also in boats. The fight in the middle of the water, which lasted about two hours, began with rifle shots. When the boats approached each other, however, the fight began with revolvers and finally with open water. The Montenegrins, who were stronger in number and had their yatagans with them, overpowered the Arnauts and killed all 25; the Montenegrins had nine dead and eleven wounded. The Montenegrin cordon guard was reinforced.”
