When thousands of Albanians defended Janina from the Greeks in 1879

In 1879, the Revalsche Zeitung published an article from Constantinople about when the Turks intended to sell Albanian territories in Epirus and Thessaly (Selanik) which led to loud protests from local Albanians. Around 2,000 Albanians sezied the city of Janina to defend it.

Cited:

“Constantinople, July 15 (3). (Delayed due to line disturbance.) The Porte’s intention to sell its domains in Epirus and Thessaly aroused a powerful protest in Albania, where this intention was regarded as proof of the impending cession of Janina to Greece. Around 2,000 armed Albanians seized the city and were greeted with military honors by the garrison stationed there. Other 2,000 Albanians belonging to the Albanian League decided to defend Janina against the Greeks, and if necessary, even against her own Turkish government.”
