The Albanian tribe of Beci from Krajë

The Albanian tribe of Beci from Krajë

In the book “Shkodra dhe motet”, authored by Hamdi Bushati, on page 269, we can read of the Albanian tribe “Beci” and their history.

Beci family

Although in general opinion the Becs are considered an Ulqin family, in reality their origins are linked to the village of Pecaj-Dukagjin, always based on the oral tradition of the family. According to this tradition, they belonged to the tribe of the Bajraktarës of Shala, but for blood reasons they moved to the Krajë highlands and created the village of Bes. It is not known how long they stayed in Krajë, but around the end of the 17th century, they settled in Ulqin. There is also a second version, as if they migrated from Kosovo, but the first is more convincing, since it is also etymologically linked to the toponyms Pecaj and Bes.

During the two centuries of living in Ulqin, they created economic relations of a considerable level: they owned 7 ships of different tonnages, in addition to the share in the ships with partnership, in addition to the properties with olive groves.

The economic power also increased the socio-political influence, placing them among the first families, which was proven by the role they would play in the events that shook the city, during the wars with the Montenegrins in the last century. The first historical source for this contribution of theirs is found in these folk verses taken from a song dedicated to the War of Kërnica, in 1862:

“Halil Beci shoots at the rock”

He is calling out to his nephew:

Go out and see the brave deserts.

The Sotermani are going uphill,

They are starting to get angry in Kërnica!”

Like Broci, among other brave Ulqin, Cena Beg, Mustafa and Daut Pelinku, Halil Beci and his nephew stand out. Another sucker of the tribe, Mehmet Beci would enter the history of the nation with his extraordinary contribution and total dedication in the wars for the defense of Ulqin (January 1878 and 1880).”
