Avdi Hysa (or Avdi Hisa) (c. 1830-1862) was a highlander and a shepherd in the Krajë Mountains of Vranina, (now in Montenegro) in 1862. According to the Lahuta e Malsis, written by Father Gjergj Fishta, Avdi Hysa is described as a simple shepherd guarding his goats in the meadow. He was murdered by Montenegrin Slav criminal Vulo Radoviq.
When Montenegro begins its attacks with the aim of occupying Vranina, 13 cuba (Montenegrin bandits organized by the Prince) approach Avdi Hysa and demand he give up his goats for the Montenegrins to eat. Avdi Hysa refuses, and points his breshane (rifle or old weapon) at the bandit commander, Vulo Radoviqi.
However, the breshana does not fire and Vula shoots and kills Avdi Hysa and robs him of his xhemedan (vest), breshana and sword. At the moment of the murder, the he-goat is frightened and runs away and Vula follows him. When Avdi’s sister sees that the he-goat has returned without Avdi, she knows that he has been killed. She then starts to mourn. Oso Kuka, a heroic figure in his part in Lahuta e Malsis, gathers some soldiers and captures the bandits and kills them, and avenges the death of Avdi Hysa.
