Publication from 1680 states the Ballshaj were Albanians

According to the publication “Historia Byzantina duplici commentario illustrata prior familias ac stemmata imperatorum Constantinopolitanorum… proeterea familias Dalmaticas et Turcicas complectitur, alter descriptionem urbis Constantinopolitanae”, written by Charles Du Fresne Du Cange of Billaine in La Chaize, dated 1680, we can read that the Balshaj family were Albanians.

In this 1680 edition it is stated that the Ballshaj are of Albanian origin (Nobilibus Albaniae natum) descendants of Alban Ballsha (Albanis Balsis) and that the coat of arms of Alban Ballsha is depicted with a golden star on a red field (photo 2). While for Stefan Cërnojeviq it is said that he is a native and when he passed to the court of the Ballshaj he received the title of nobility and was given Montenegro for rule. The coat of arms of the Cërnojeviqs is described as a golden crowned eagle on a red field.
