Armed Albanian women in the 15th century

Authored by Eli Eli. Translation Petrit Latifi

There were many women in the army dressed militarily and accompanying their men with weapons in hand in 15th century Albania. A manuscript document by Agostino Tocci from 1650, found in San Cosmo Albanese in the house of Flaminio Tocci and published in Florence in 1866 by Gerolamo de Rada and Niccolò Jeno de ‘Coronei as an appendix to ‘rhapsodies of an Albanian poem’, says:

Cited:

“The Albanian knights who commanded the soldier were called Cola Mark Shini, Elia Mallisi and Marco de Mathia, both of whom were from Shkodra. In the army there were many women dressed in military attire and who accompanied their men with weapons in their hands, and then together with the aforementioned soldiers they entered. The Turks led by Joussuf Bassa came to Antivar, where the Albanians had gathered with D. Giovanni Castriota”.
