When the Albanian-Montenegrin border was in Jelenak and Boljanica in 1892

In 1892, the “Salzburg ChronicleWochenblatt für den Gewerbe- und Bauernstand”, in its Volume 28, published an article about a blood-feud between Albanian malesoris and Montenegrins. This article contains valuable information and it is interesting to note that the Albanians “crossed the border” in Jelenak, which is deep in modern day Montenegro. This shows that Albanians lived deep into Montenegro. When the Montenegrin decided to avenge themselves, they crossed the border in Boljanica, which is modern day Boljanići. There they killed Marko Kola of Selca. This also shows where Albanians lived, which is far up in Plevlje.

Cited:

“From Gettinje, the N. Fr. Bresse writes:

The blood feud still refuses to die down along our eastern border. Some time ago, a Malissor band crossed the Montenegrin border near Jeleniak (Jelenak) and killed the Montenegrin subject Mirko Stanojev of Kralje, who was peacefully grazing his cattle. The perpetrators were arrested by the Turkish authorities and brought to Scutari. During their interrogation, it was revealed that the attack was carried out to avenge an old tribal blood feud.

Although the Montenegrin government immediately took the strictest measures to prevent the conflict from escalating, members of the slain Mirko Stanojev’s tribe crossed the border near Boljanica and killed the Malisorian Marko Kolin (alb: Mark Kola) of Selca in retaliation. These perpetrators were likewise captured and brought in chains—some sources say to Scutari, others to Cettinje.”
