Russian military war crimes against Albanian prisoners of war in 1854

In this publication, titled “Der” Schweizer-Bote”, Volume 51, from 1854, we can read that the author states that if Albanian forces (Arnauts) were captured by the Russian forces, they would not be treated as prisoners of wars, but as robbers, and as such, be shot on the spot.

Cited:

“Constantinople Only very minor events can be reported from the theater of war. The battle for possession of the Danube islands off Giurgevo, Oltenitsa, Kalarash, and Ibraila continues with varying fortunes. These points are of some strategic importance because they can serve as pivots for military operations. Ibraila is suffering greatly from the bombardment from Turkish beach batteries, which have already been destroyed five times but have been springing up again like mushrooms for the past few days.

Since the Russians are housed in a tent camp below the city, the damage only affects the unfortunate city dwellers, which also applies to Giurgevo. For the past few days, Arnauts wandering to the left bank, if they fall into Russian hands, are no longer treated as prisoners of war, but as robbers, i.e., they are shot on the spot. This decision by Prince Gorchakoff was notified by a parliamentarian to Giafer Pasha in Turtukai, who is a feared chieftain of 8,000 Arnauts. He shouldn’t worry too much about it”.
