In 1878, the Albanian League of Prizren had a branch in Novi Pazar in order to defend Albanian local interests. The Mufti of Plevlje, an Albanian himself, connected to the League, brought with him forces led by Albanian beys in the Battle of Posavina in 1878 against the Austro-Hungarian forces. In the book “Босански Устанак 1875 – 1878 Av Васа Чубриловић, Здравко Антонић” from 1996 we can read:
Mufti of Plevlje
“If the Mufti of Plevlje was, and was not, connected with the Albanian League, it is difficult for me to determine for sure based on the information available to me. The links between the Bosnians and the Albanian League existed because at the League assembly in Prizren it was decided to organize six volunteer corps; two to be sent to Bosnia.”
Battle of Posavina
“The Austrian envoy in Constantinople reported to his government on August 27 that the Arnauts had rejected the Bosnians call to send 20,000 young men to their aid. On his second visit to Bosnia, the Mufti of Plevlje brought with him several Arnaut beys, who fought with him in Posavina. He himself often promised the Bosnians in his speeches that the Arnauts would come to their aid, and with help from Albania, others were also agitating in Bosnia and Herzegovina at that time. “
“That the mufti himself had connections with the League, or even was a member of it, seems certain. The Albanian League had its own organizations in the Novi Pazar of Sandžak. The central board of these organizations was located in Novi Pazar. It had its branches in all the smaller towns of the Sandžak.
The Mufti of Plevlje had to be one of the members of these organizations. He had known Hafiz Pasha since the wars of 1876-1878 against Montenegro and Serbia. Even then, he led the Bashi-Bazookas and distinguished himself in battles. It is understandable, then, why Hafiz Pasha brought him with him to Sarajevo, where he himself had come not to prevent, but to prepare resistance against the occupation.”
With his departure, eastern Bosnia was completely pacified. In the areas between the Drina and Sarajevo, the movement received a fatal blow with the great Bosnian defeat at Šenković and Bandin Odžak on September 21, 1878.
In Krajina, the bloodiest battles took place around Ključ and Bihać, where the Austrian companies were defeated on September 7. And there, force finally won. When new Austrian divisions arrived, Bihać fell on September 19, Petrovac on the 25th, and Livno on the 28th. In October, Bužim and Beširević Krajina were still defended.
On the 6th and 7th, a real battle was fought near Pejë. When everything had fallen, a new master was already ruling the entire country, Kladuša Hrnjica Muja was still defending itself, and on October 20, 1878, it too fell, and with it the last piece of Bosnian land”.
