Smajl Marku Camaj

In the historical register of the Highlands where the names of the brave, loyal fighters for the freedom of the Highlands, the Nation and Albanianism are marked in golden letters, a place of honor is also occupied by Smajl Marku, or Smajl Pasha of the Vuksanlekajve of Hoti.

Palokë Luni in his book “History of the Great Highlands”, published in 2006, writes about this brave man of the pen and the rifle:

“And Smajl Marku, the brave of Hoti,
Brave and strong, facing the trench,
In a fierce fight against this cruel man.
Not only did he lead the line of Helmi,
But he also led the war against the Turks”.

He was:

  • A personality of the time who enjoyed special respect in Hot and in the Highlands.
  • Educated in Istanbul in the most prestigious schools of the time.
  • Promoted as a clerk and major officer during the Renaissance period.
  • Delegate and participant in the Albanian League of Prizren.
  • Coordinator and collaborator with the leaders of the Highlands.
  • Representative of the Pizren League of the Shkodra Branch, for the control of the western borders of Hoti.
