In 1876-77, Montenegrin forces expanded on Albanian territories invading Tivar, Ulqin, Spič which were inhabited by Albanians and defended by them. Even though the Austro-Hungarians promised support to the Albanian forces, they had to defend the regions alone against the Montenegrin imperialists.
“When Spič fell, the Arnauts wept with anger — not because they lost their land, but because they had believed in promises from Vienna.”
