The expulsion of Tosk Muslim Albanians from the Peloponnese peninsula by Algerian Gazi Hasan Pasha in 1792

In this article, we can read Osmanzade Taib Ahmed Efendi’s famous work on the biographies of the Grand Viziers, “Hadikatu’l-Vüzerâ”, in the section on the Grand Vizier Gazi Hasan Pasha. Data is recorded regarding the expulsion of Tosk Muslim Albanians from the Peloponnese peninsula through the agency of the Algerian Gazi Hasan Pasha (year 1792).

Translation:

“We ask from Almighty God complete protection and divine assistance.
He, known by the name Ebu’l-Bürût, having served as the head of the Algerian fleet, exerted great effort and displayed bravery on the battlefield. Eventually, he sought refuge and entrusted himself to the Sublime State, arriving at the Imperial Court. During the grand vizierate of Râgıb Pasha, he attained his aims and was appointed as governor of Algiers.

Later, Hasan Pasha was summoned to the capital on the account of dismissal from his post; his property was confiscated, yet he continued to serve in the imperial campaigns.

Moreover, he took upon himself the reform and strengthening of naval affairs, becoming one of the foremost champions of Islam, showing courage and valor upon the sea.

Afterwards, he suppressed the rebellious Tosk Albanian forces in the Peloponnese (Mora), expelling them entirely by sea. For this service he was greatly praised, and the people of the Peloponnese were saved through his efforts.”
