In the book “Geografia ecclesiastica dell’Albania dagli ultimi decenni del secolo XVIe alla metà del secolo XVIIe” by Fulvio Cordignano, published 1934, there is a report by Francesco Leonardi of Seruia and Albania, on a Apostolic Missionary, titled “Scr. Ref. III Albania, Macedonia an. 1648, vol. 264”. Here we can read of the Albanian Catholic villages of Zubce, Sussani (Shusan), Spic of Sutomore, Sozina, Lugiemille, and Shestani which are in need of spiritual workers.

“…to let them perish, finding themselves surrounded by Turks and Schismatics. And because in the execution of certain commissions of the Sacred Congregation I have visited the Diocese of Antivari and also a large part of Albania, and have observed various particulars, I will likewise relate the spiritual conditions and needs of those lands.

In the arch-diocese of Antivari, which besides the town’s borough includes the villages of Zubče, Sussani, Spizza (Sutomore), Sozina, Lugiemille, and the communes of Sestanni (which comprise more than ten villages), there are no more than five priests: Pietro Samu­eli (Vicar); Antonio Tomasi; Pietro Giorga, parish priest of Sussani; Giorgio Vuschouich, apostolic missionary and parish priest of Sestanni; and Father Donato of Spizza, also apostolic missionary and parish priest of Spizza and Sozina.

This diocese counts about five thousand Catholics, and is in extreme need of workers, because the two priests residing in the town cannot tend to the needs of Zubče and Iugiemille where they exercise the cure of souls. Giorgio Vuschouich alone cannot sustain so many villages located half a day’s journey apart; Father Donato of Spizza cannot often be at Sozina, distant ten miles (ten mil) from Spizza. From this comes that from time to time the faithful die without the Sacraments.

And all the more this diocese has need of ministers because it is on all sides surrounded by Schismatics who are gradually inserting themselves, as can be seen in Spizza where up to lately the majority has become Schismatic.”
