In 1862 the “Tagespost” in Graz published an article about the Battle of Krnjice (Kërnice) in 1862 between Albanian forces and Montenegrins.
Cited:
“WAR IN KRNJICE. Events in Albania. On March 31, it is written about the latest events in Albania: After the failure of negotiations with Omer Pasha, 6000 men from the Albanian land militia (army) under Hasan Hoti from the Hoti, Kelmendi, Kastrati and Pastriba tribes moved to the place (village) Kërnjica which had joined Montenegro and requested princely protection.
This community, which had fled from the Turks and was now ready to be saved, asked for help from the Nahs of Montenegro, the Cërmnica and Rječani (Rjeka?), who immediately rushed to the aid of Pop Kusovac.
The Albanians had already occupied the safest positions and strong houses. But Nikolla, the captain of the municipality of Krnjica, defended his hearth bravely until support arrived. The war lasted six days with a short break. Help for the Turks came from the lake and from the land (Kërnjica is on Lake Shkodra west of Shkodra). Steamboats with boats and cannon fire could do nothing.
On the seventh day, after the Montenegrins had destroyed the strong position and the walls of the houses with cannons and when the Turks had 500 dead, Hasan Hoti surrendered to the Montenegrins with 449 men. Of these prisoners, 288 were Turks (Muslim Albanians), the rest Catholics.”
