When the Kuçi tribe were Catholic Albanians before being invaded by Montenegro in 1876

In this book titled “Oberalbanien und seine Liga ethnographisch-politisch-historisch” from 1881 we can read the following:

“The Kuči Drekalovići tribe: For the sake of completeness, this formerly Albanian tribe, belonging to Montenegro since 1876, should also be mentioned here. Its territory is 360 kilometers in size. From the fact that it provided the Montenegrins with 1500 armed men, a population of at least 9000 souls can be inferred.

Today, they are all Greek Serbs but according to Bolizza’s statements, it seems as if they were formerly Catholic Albanians. He estimates their strength at 1500 men in 490 houses, commanded by Lale Drekalović and Niko Rajcković, and gives them the predicate “gente bellicosissima et valorosissima” (most belligerent and most valorous people.

He lists them among the rebels and says that the soldiers of Medun were tasked with keeping them in check, and that Sem Čauš (Shem Qaushi) of Podgorica was supposed to be the governor.”
