The first Albanian-Arab newspaper “Haqq al-Albān” (حق الألبان “The Rights of the Albanians”) from 1912

by Sakica Decanit. Translation Petrit Latifi

This is the front page of the only Arab-Albanian newspaper “Haqq al-Albān” (The Right of the Albanians), published in Alexandria, Egypt on November 1, 1912 by Faik Konica. At the top of the page, the large headline حق الألبان (Haqq al-Albān) opens a main article where Konica defends the historical and national right of the Albanians to autonomy within the Ottoman Empire. He emphasizes:

  • The Albanians are an ancient nation with a unique language, culture and traditions, not Slavic or Greek.
  • As loyal Muslims, they deserve the support of the Arab and Ottoman worlds against Slavic and Greek expansion.
  • Calls for education in the Albanian language, the preservation of identity and the right to self-government.
  • Mentions Skënderbeg as a national symbol and the uprisings of 1910–1912.

The newspaper was written in Arabic to gain sympathy from the Arab and Turkish Muslim elite, on the eve of the First Balkan War. It was an urgent call for justice and national survival.
