In 1862, Montenegrin forces Mirko Petrović-Njegoš were defeated by the Albanians under Omer Pasha of Shkodër. These battles took place in the regions of Yeni Köy, Spuž or Shpuz, Kosovo Luka and Bila. On June 2, 1862, the paper “Grätzer Zeitung” in an article under the section “Cours-Blatt”, writes:
“Shkodër, May 30th.
Omer Pasha to the Turkish envoy in Vienna: The Montenegrins had erected a fortification near a tower close to Yeni Köy to cut off our army’s connection with Spuž. On Wednesday, May 28th, Abdi Pasha ordered six battalions and 500 irregulars to attack this position. The Montenegrins did not engage in battle and abandoned their fortifications, which, along with the tower, were destroyed by our troops.
Since the enemy had taken up positions in the villages of Bila and Kosov Lok, our troops attacked them there as well. After encountering resistance, the Montenegrins set the village on fire and retreated into the mountains. Apart from the Albanian chief Hot Bey, who was slightly wounded, we have no losses to report. The enemy’s losses are unknown.
Dubrovnik (Ragusa), May 31st.
After Abdi Pasha had secured the Bjelopavlići district, a wing of Mirko, the father of the Prince of Montenegro, was cut off from the main corps and defeated near Martinići. After suffering losses of about 500 men, the Turks retreated to Spuž.
